Technical SEO Consulting – An Important Early Career Step

Looking back on my time as a technical SEO consultant at CatBird Seat – why this early position shaped my perspective on client communication, business goals, and technical decisions to this day.

What was CatBird Seat?

CatBird Seat was an established online marketing agency with offices in Munich and Berlin and over 60 employees. The focus was on various areas of digital marketing, particularly in the technical and strategic environment of SEO and e-commerce.

Why did I work as an SEO consultant?

During my studies, I was already able to gain practical experience in online marketing and technical SEO as a working student. Therefore, it was a natural thought to continue working in this field after graduation.

I found the technical side of SEO particularly interesting, as it had many touchpoints with programming, web technologies, and performance optimization. At the same time, it was fascinating to see how closely technology and business goals are interconnected in e-commerce.

Why did I leave this field again?

Over time, it became increasingly clear to me that my true passion lies more in software development and more complex technical challenges. I was primarily motivated by analytical, architectural, and programming-related topics.

Therefore, after a few months, I consciously decided to dive deeper into classic software development and focus more on programming, system logic, and technical problem-solving.

What did I take away from this time?

Even though the specific SEO tools had limited relevance for my later career positions, this time was very valuable both professionally and personally.

Among other things, I learned:

  • how important clear client communication is,
  • how professional coordination and email communication work,
  • how crucial teamwork is for successful projects,
  • and how strongly technical decisions can be connected to business goals.

Furthermore, this experience helped me view technical topics not only from a developer's perspective, but also from the perspective of clients, users, and business requirements.

Looking back, this position was an important part of my professional journey because it complemented my technical development with communication and business aspects.
